Motorcyle Insurance Coverages
Motorcycle coverages are similar to auto coverage, but there is a different perspective that you must consider as a bike owner besides the physical damage protection for your bike and customization.
Sometimes bike owners don’t worry about how much liability is on their policy because they have the thought process that bikes cannot cause nearly as much damage as a vehicle. That can be a good train of thought when it comes to Property Damage (PD) Liability, but it does not work that way for Bodily Injury (BI) Liability and the connection to Uninsured and Underinsured Motorists (UM/UIM) protection.
The biggest difference between auto and motorcycle insurance BI coverage is that your motorcycle BI can also cover someone who is riding your bike with you. On the auto, BI coverage typically does not cover passengers; on motorcycle policies, BI takes care of an injured passenger. This is very important especially when you are considered to be at fault or you are held liable. You don’t want a crushing financial blow to topple your life savings because you took someone for a ride and you had an accident.
Bike owners should also closely examine the connection between the liability coverage limit and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists coverage. Experienced motorcycle owners are usually pretty good at avoiding accidents and averting a potential accident.
However, it is usually impossible to avoid a distracted driver from hitting the bike. Because of this (and the high amount of uninsured drivers now on the road), it is important your UM/UIM coverage is high enough to compensate for this possibility. You can only have as high UM/UIM as your BI, so set your BI limits high.
We believe it is very important for motorcycle enthusiasts to enjoy the open road on their bikes, and we want to make the experience more enjoyable with the peace of mind knowing proper protection is in place.
